The Ministry of Education has begun distributing over 500,000 free digital learning tablets to public primary schools nationwide, in a bold move aimed at integrating technology into early education.
Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Esther Mumo launched the initiative at a ceremony in Machakos, stating that the program will bridge the digital divide and improve access to quality education for all learners.
“Technology is no longer a luxury in education — it is a necessity. This program will equip our children with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy,” said Dr. Mumo.
The devices, preloaded with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) content, are expected to benefit learners from Grade 1 to Grade 6. Teachers are also undergoing specialized training to incorporate digital tools into their lesson delivery.
The rollout is part of the government’s broader Digital Literacy Program (DLP), funded in partnership with local tech firms and international donors.
